How to use a body scrub

Scrubbing is a good way to make your skin smoother and more even, reduce the appearance of “orange peel”, and get rid of flaking and dryness. There are many recipes on how to make a body scrub with your own hands from available ingredients – ground coffee, sugar, salt and vegetable oils.

Certain rules when making body scrubs at home
  • Exfoliate. To make a scrub, you need something that will act as an abrasive with very small scrubbing particles that will gently polish the skin, removing a layer of dead epidermal cells from its surface. This can be ground coffee, granulated sugar or coarse sea salt.
  • Nutritional basis. The second component should simultaneously play the role of a binder for scrubbing particles and a nourishing base that will soften the skin, preventing irritation. Most often, natural oils are used for this – for example, olive or coconut – or liquid honey.
  • Essential oils. The third component of a homemade body scrub is aromatic essential oils, which will give the product a pleasant smell and also help to have an additional effect on the skin – for example, making it more toned, increasing its elasticity or reducing the severity of stretch marks.
  • Apply the product only to damp skin. When applied to a dry body, scrubbing particles can scratch the epidermis or leave behind irritation and redness. To prevent this from happening, use the product while taking a shower or bath. Steam your skin before scrubbing. This will help soften the skin and make it much easier to exfoliate dead cells.
  • Do not use body scrub on your face and vice versa. Body products use harsher exfoliating particles, which can damage thin facial skin. But soft facial products on the body will simply be ineffective, and you most likely will not notice the result.
  • After exfoliating, apply moisturizer, milk or oil. A well-exfoliated skin becomes more sensitive and delicate than usual, so it needs active hydration. In addition, using a nourishing product will make your skin even smoother and keep it moisturized for a long time.
  • Use scrubs no more than once or twice a week. More frequent use will not be effective and may damage the top layer of skin and cause discomfort. More often, you can only use soft shower gels with rounded massage particles that are suitable for daily use.
